    Minimum Lens Size Supporting the Leaky-Wave Nature of Slit Dipole Antenna at Terahertz Frequency

    We designed a slit dipole antenna backed by an extended hemispherical silicon lens and investigated the minimum lens size in which the slit dipole antenna works as a leaky-wave antenna. The slit dipole antenna consists of a planar feeding structure, which is a center-fed and open-ended slot line. A slit dipole antenna backed by an extended hemispherical silicon lens is investigated over a frequency range from 0.2 to 0.4 THz with the center frequency at 0.3 THz. The numerical results show that the antenna gain responses exhibited an increased level of sensitivity to the lens size and increased linearly with increasing lens radius. The lens with the radius of 1.2 lambda(o) is found to be the best possible minimum lens size for a slit dipole antenna on an extended hemispherical silicon lens.1124sciescopu

    Anti-Neuroinflammatory Effects of Houttuynia cordata Extract on LPS-Stimulated BV-2 Microglia

    Purpose: To evaluate the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of Houttuynia cordata extract (H. cordata) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells, and its anti-oxidant properties.Methods: Anti-oxidant properties were evaluated by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Cell viability was assessed by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5- diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. LPS was used to stimulate BV-2 cells. Nitric oxide (NO) levels were measured using Griess assay. Inducible NO synthase (iNOS) expression, interleukin (IL)-6 expressional level were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot analysis.Results: Ethyl actetae (HC-EA) extract of H. cordata significantly scavenged DPPH free radicals in a concentration-dependent fashion. The increased levels of NO, iNOS and IL-6 in LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells were also suppressed by HC-EA extract in a concentration-dependent manner.Conclusion:The result indicate that the HC-EA extract exhibited strong anti-oxidant properties and inhibited the excessive production of pro-inflammatory mediators, including NO, iNOS and IL-6, in LPSstimulated BV-2 cells. The anti-oxidant phenolic compounds present in HC-EA extract might play an important role in ameliorating neuroinflammatory processes in LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells.Keywords: Houttuynia cordata, DPPH radicals, antioxidant, neuroinflammation, BV-2 cells, iNOS, COX-2, IL-6

    Application of extended end composite pile design in pile foundation work

    Pre-tensioned, spun, high-strength concrete (PHC) piles are the most commonly used type of pile in South Korea. Approximately 60% of the pile's strength is used in the design bearing capacity, and the rest is simply residing in the ground. Increasing the ground bearing capacity is crucial to reduce waste of the pile strength and to improve efficiency. Extended end (Ext) piles are a new kind of composite pile that can overcome the weakness of PHC piles. This study investigates the behaviour of Ext piles. Through field testing, it is confirmed that the bearing capacity of Ext piles is better than PHC piles by about 35% to 50%. Based on the study findings, the Ext pile design reduces the number of piles by around 38% compared to the PHC pile design through application in a selected construction site. The increased bearing capacity of Ext piles affects both work duration and project cost, which are 25% and 14% decreased, respectively

    Wikipedia (WP) as a collaborative, dynamical system of humans is an appropriate subject of social studies. Each single action of the members of this society, i.e. editors, is well recorded and accessible. Using the cumulative data of 34 Wikipedias in different languages, we try to characterize and find the universalities and differences in temporal activity patterns of editors. Based on this data, we estimate the geographical distribution of editors for each WP in the globe. Furthermore we also clarify the differences among different groups of WPs, which originate in the variance of cultural and social features of the communities of editors

    Thienothiophene-benzotriazole-based semicrystalline linear copolymers for organic field effect transistors

    A series of thienothiophene-benzotriazole-based semicrystalline copolymers, PTTBTz, PTTBTz-F, and PTTBTz-OR, were synthesized by considering chain linearity, planarity and inter-chain packing by virtue of non-covalent attractive interaction. Fluorine and alkoxy substituents were introduced to modulate the intra- and inter-chain coulombic interactions and crystalline ordering. The fluorine and alkoxy-substituted PTTBTz-F and PTTBTz-OR showed pronounced inter-chain packing with edge-on orientation confirmed by UV-vis absorption and X-ray diffraction measurements. The well-resolved diffraction patterns were obtained for PTTBTz-F and PTTBTz-OR, showing (100)similar to(500) inter-lamellar scattering peaks (d-spacing, 17 similar to 18 angstrom) in the out-of-plane direction and a pi-pi stacking peak (d-spacing, 3.5 similar to 4.1 angstrom) in the in-plane direction. Organic field effect transistor (OFET) devices were fabricated with a bottom gate and top contact geometry. PTTBTz-F (mu(h) = 4.49 x 10(-2) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), on/off ratio = 1.13 x 107) and PTTBTz-OR (mu(h) = 8.39 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), on/off ratio = 2.98 x 104) showed nearly 3 and 2 orders of magnitude higher hole mobility upon annealing at 305 and 260 degrees C, with compared to the unsubstituted PTTBTz.X1165Ysciescopu

    Seeing two faces together: preference formation in humans and rhesus macaques

    Humans, great apes and old world monkeys show selective attention to faces depending on conspecificity, familiarity, and social status supporting the view that primates share similar face processing mechanisms. Although many studies have been done on face scanning strategy in monkeys and humans, the mechanisms influencing viewing preference have received little attention. To determine how face categories influence viewing preference in humans and rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), we performed two eye-tracking experiments using a visual preference task whereby pairs of faces from different species were presented simultaneously. The results indicated that viewing time was significantly influenced by the pairing of the face categories. Humans showed a strong bias towards an own-race face in an Asian–Caucasian condition. Rhesus macaques directed more attention towards non-human primate faces when they were paired with human faces, regardless of the species. When rhesus faces were paired with faces from Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) or chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), the novel species’ faces attracted more attention. These results indicate that monkeys’ viewing preferences, as assessed by a visual preference task, are modulated by several factors, species and dominance being the most influential

    Solution-processed n-type fullerene field-effect transistors prepared using CVD-grown graphene electrodes: improving performance with thermal annealing

    Solution-processed organic field effect transistors (OFETs), which are amenable to facile large-area processing methods, have generated significant interest as key elements for use in all-organic electronic applications aimed at realizing low-cost, lightweight, and flexible devices. The low performance levels of n-type solution-processed bottom-contact OFETs unfortunately continue to pose a barrier to their commercialization. In this study, we introduced a combination of CVD-grown graphene source/drain (S/D) electrodes and fullerene (C-60) in a solution-processable n-type semiconductor toward the fabrication of n-type bottom-contact OFETs. The C-60 coating in the channel region was achieved by modifying the surface of the oxide gate dielectric layer with a phenyl group-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The graphene and phenyl group in the SAMs induced pi-pi interactions with C-60, which facilitated the formation of a C-60 coating. We also investigated the effects of thermal annealing on the reorganization properties and field-effect performances of the overlaying solution-processed C-60 semiconductors. We found that thermal annealing of the C-60 layer on the graphene surface improved the crystallinity of the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase structure, which improved the OFET performance and yielded mobilities of 0.055 cm(2) V-1 s(-1).     Spectroscopic analysis of finite size effects around a Kondo quantum dot

    We consider a simple setup in which a small quantum dot is strongly connected to a finite size box. This box can be either a metallic box or a finite size quantum wire.The formation of the Kondo screening cloud in the box strongly depends on the ratio between the Kondo temperature and the box level spacing. By weakly connecting two metallic reservoirs to the quantum dot, a detailed spectroscopic analysis can be performed. Since the transport channels and the screening channels are almost decoupled, such a setup allows an easier access to the measure of finite-size effects associated with the finite extension of the Kondo cloud.Comment: contribution to Les Houches proceeding, ``Quantum magnetism'' 200

    A comparative study on the marginal fit of zirconia cores manufactured by CAD/CAM and copy milling methods

    Purpose: The marginal fit of zirconia cores that were produced by CAD/CAM and by copy milling systems was compared and analyzed to confirm the significance of the variation in dental technicians skill between the two systems.Materials and Methods: Using dental resin teeth and individual trays, 30 plaster casts were produced. Fifteen casts were assigned to be used with five different zirconia core manufacturing dental laboratories using the same CAD/CAM system, which were designated as the CC group. The remaining 15 were assigned to be used with five different zirconia core manufacturing dental laboratories using also the same copy milling system and were designated as the CM group. The zirconia cores were fabricated and were cemented onto the casts. The vertical marginal opening was measured under an optical microscope at 75x magnification. The measured vertical marginal discrepancies were analyzed using an independent sample t-test, and the significance of the vertical marginal gap value for each dental laboratory was analyzed by performing the Kruskal-Wallis test.Results: The means and standard deviations for the marginal discrepancies of the CC and CM groups were found to be 102.73 ± 29.73 μm and 82.25 ± 22.37 μm, respectively. The independent sample t-test showed a significant difference between the two systems; the CAD/CAM system showed a larger vertical marginal gap than the copy milling system. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that no significant distributional differences were found between the dental laboratories in either the CAD/CAM or the copy milling systems.Conclusions: The copy milling system may produce more accurate zirconia restorations than the CAD/CAM system.     Ancient Microbes from Halite Fluid Inclusions: Optimized Surface Sterilization and DNA Extraction

    Fluid inclusions in evaporite minerals (halite, gypsum, etc.) potentially preserve genetic records of microbial diversity and changing environmental conditions of Earth's hydrosphere for nearly one billion years. Here we describe a robust protocol for surface sterilization and retrieval of DNA from fluid inclusions in halite that, unlike previously published methods, guarantees removal of potentially contaminating surface-bound DNA. The protocol involves microscopic visualization of cell structures, deliberate surface contamination followed by surface sterilization with acid and bleach washes, and DNA extraction using Amicon centrifugal filters. Methods were verified on halite crystals of four different ages from Saline Valley, California (modern, 36 ka, 64 ka, and 150 ka), with retrieval of algal and archaeal DNA, and characterization of the algal community using ITS1 sequences. The protocol we developed opens up new avenues for study of ancient microbial ecosystems in fluid inclusions, understanding microbial evolution across geological time, and investigating the antiquity of life on earth and other parts of the solar system
